My inguinal hernia was diagnosed while I was abroad, and internet searches led me to Martin Kurzer. I do not believe I could have made a better choice: he is engaging, kind, and understanding, and he was most attentive in rescheduling my admission after I inconveniently developed a cough. I have no doubt that the surgery he performed was of the highest standard, and the quality of care provided by all the staff of the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth was outstanding. The operation was carried out in the early afternoon; I stayed the night, and the next day was able to return by train to Norfolk without difficulty. To start with I had a lot of swelling, considerable soreness, discomfort, and a burning sensation; but there was no real pain, and I did not need any of the painkillers I had been provided with - just paracetamol for a few days. I also took lactulose as suggested. Walking helped the discomfort (standing was more comfortable than sitting or lying down), and generally there was no difficulty in doing simple household tasks. After four weeks all of these effects had gone, leaving just a feeling of tightness, a little tenderness, and an occasional ache. Thank you, Martin Kurzer.

After being messed around for 4 years on the NHS and being told I didn't have a hernia, then I did, then I didn't, then I did again and having a operation cancelled last May and hearing nothing since, I decided to search the Internet to see if there were any other options. I'm so glad I came across this site and found the reviews on Martin Kurzer. I immediately booked a consultation and saw him in a few days. It was so nice to see someone who specialises just in hernias and knows what they are talking about. He instantly confirmed that I had an umbilical hernia and took the time to answer my questions. You never feel rushed or unimportant, and the surgery was booked in for three weeks time (as it was Christmas). Having waited for 4 years to get to this point I had had plenty of sleepless nights and was fairly nervous about the surgery - especially after reading lots of horror stories online about how painful it was and all sorts of problems with mesh etc. Well I had nothing to worry about. I woke up from the anaesthetic and to my amasement had no pain whatsoever. I expected it to kick in after a few hours, but still nothing. After 4 hours I left the hospital and went to a hotel I had booked in London. That evening I was able to go out to a restaurant for a meal, still in no pain. I continued to take paracetamol for a few days as advised, but stopped after 2 days and still had no pain. I couldn't believe it. I was a little sore getting up and sitting down but apart from that was absolutely fine. I went back to work on the 2nd day after my surgery. After a week I took the dressing off and there was a very neat 4 inch scar which was barely visible and now I am completely back to normal. Martin did a fantastic job and I'm so glad I found him and went to an expert. I only wish I had done so straight away all those years ago. I couldn't recommend him enough to anyone needing a hernia repair.

I had a lump for over a year before a fourth GP finally diagnosed a hernia. I was referred to a general surgeon who also happened to perform repairs upon hernias. After reading about Mr Kurzer I was impressed with the amount of information available and decided to consult him. I had carried out a lot of research about hernias and read about others' experiences on internet forums. Within seconds Mr Kurzer confirmed I had a hernia and told me it was an inguinal hernia whereas after a costly private ultrascan the week before, the consultant radiologist wrote to my GP incorrectly informing them that I had a femoral hernia. Not only was this incorrect, but it was most worrisome because they can be more 'dangerous' than inguinal hernias. His expertise was supreme. Mr Kurzer specialises in hernia repairs and what he does not know about hernias could probably be written upon the head of a pin. His calm voice was soothing. He answered all questions I had. He is a most approachable and friendly person. The choice of whether to wait for a general surgeon or pay for an expert and experienced surgeon was a simple one (even though my salary is extremely basic) Within a week my hernia was repaired. I have experienced private hospitals and consultants before. I live in East Anglia in the UK. The trip to London was easy. Nothing comes close to matching the experience I had with Mr Kurzer. The big name private hospitals all over the UK cannot hold a candle to the treatment I received from Mr Kurzer and his staff. Upon chatting with the staff, even they stated how great Mr Kurzer was; always friendly and polite and having time to chat with them. I am most grateful to Mr Kurzer and I am so relieved that such an expert exists. I absolutely recommend him. It is only because of the exemplary treatment that I write such a review.

I have had three hernias repaired by Martin, an inguinal and umbilical in 2014 and an inguinal, on the other side, in November 2018 . I returned to Martin this year as in 2014 the service I received was simply fantastic. From the outset Martin put my mind at ease. Answered all my concerns and then executed the procedure flawlessly. The support staff from the anaesthesiologist, nurses ,porters and admissions staff were all superb. After the operation Martin showed his commitment and professionalism consistently by calling over the following week to ensure I was recovering as he would expect. At seven days I visited him for a follow up where he explained what to expect. Last week, November 2018, when I had the second hernia repaired. The choice to come to Martin was never in doubt. The service was once again of impeccable standard. Some of the support staff were the same and they were simply delightful. As I do not reside in the UK I needed to fly in for the operation and then spend seven days recovering before flying home. Despite the additional costs of travel and hotels it is absolutely worth every penny to have these repairs done properly by the leader in hernia repair. Thank you Martin

After discovering I had an inguinal hernia and finding Mr Kurzer on-line I contacted his office and he agreed to see me the following day. I had already had two consultations prior to this and arrived at my appointment with Mr Kurzer armed with a list of unanswered questions. Unlike other consultations, where I had a preferred method of repair presented to me, Martin began by listening to my concerns and answering my questions. He was able to consider a number of different repair techniques leaving me in no doubt of his skill and knowledge of the procedure. Martin posses the unique ability to describe complex procedures using the simplest and most wonderful of analogies, explaining the treatment options in an accessible way, (ask him about wallpaper, bicycle tyres and button holes). He was even able to present me with small samples of the different mesh types, explaining the pros and cons of each. I felt as though I was - in a small way - part of the decision making process when it came to the method of repair. My procedure was scheduled for 1 week later, and from the moment I arrived at the hospital I was met with the most caring and sensitive staff. Meeting the Anaesthetist, I expressed my desire to be completely unaware of the procedure and this is exactly what happened. The procedure took what seemed to be 1 second after which I awoke back in the hospital room looking at a pot of tea and a chocolate muffin. Martin came to see me the following day and again listened to my concerns and answered all of my questions about recovery. He then stayed for about 30mins and we chatted and discussed common interests. At no point did I feel that I was taking-up someone's time or being hurriedly processed. As we said good-bye I was left with the impression that my procedure had been carried out by a friend who had my recovery and best interests at heart. I experienced a manageable amount of pain after the procedure for approximately 4 days and did not need the pain killers I was discharged with. I would have no hesitation in recommending Martin. He is clearly skilled, knowledgeable and passionate about his field of medicine and most importantly listened to my concerns when considering the type of repair best suited to my situation. Thank you Martin.
